Termites are not a recent introduction to the US. They have been living in our soils for over 20 million years. Their natural habitat is the forest where they perform a very useful function of consuming fallen branches and tree stumps. At the time our homes were built, the forest was largely removed but the termites were not. Many people believe that termites are active only in the spring and hibernate the rest of the year. That belief is completely false. They are active throughout the entire year, but show themselves only during their reproductive period in the spring. A single colony may have as many as 1,000,000 members. |
