Termites cannot live in the air and consequently enter your home in many ways that are often very hard to detect. An accurate termite inspection requires the "trained eye" of an experienced termite control technician. Garrie Pest Control has excellent inspectors ready to provide you with prompt and efficient service.
Termites are not a recent introduction to the US. They have been living in our soils for over 20 million years. Their natural habitat is the forest where they perform a very useful function of consuming fallen branches and tree stumps. At the time our homes were built, the forest was largely removed but the termites were not. The $250,000,000 of property damage caused by termites each year is evidence of the fact that the wood in our homes is just as palatable and nutritious to them as a dead tree in the forest.

There is no doubt that termites are much more prevalent in homes today than they were 30 years ago. There are many reasons for this, but the most important are:

1. Modern architecture has brought the wood closer to to the soil, shortening the termites "commuting" distance. 3. The soils next to our foundation walls are much warmer because of the increasing use of heated basements for recreation. This attracts termites and accelerates their build up
2. Extensive use of of masonry, especially in entrance stoops and breezeways has given protection to termites from unfavorable weather, making it possible for them to work year-round without interruption. 4. Wood now moves so rapidly from forest to home that little of the carbohydrates are lost through seasoning. This makes the wood very appealing to termites .

Many people believe that termites are active only in the spring and hibernate the rest of the year. That belief is completely false. They are active throughout the entire year, but show themselves only during their reproductive period in the spring.

A single colony may have as many as 1,000,000 members.
